How to choose an engagement ring - Part 1

Your engagement ring is your most important piece of jewellery you will wear. After all you will be wearing it for the rest of your life.
With that in mind you don't want to pick something that may be the height of fashion now, but in ten to fifteen years time may be a 'sow's ear'.
Consider your lifestyle.

If you are an active person you may need a ring that will withstand your daily activities. A rub/bezel setting protects the girdle (outside edge) of your stones. This is the most vulnerable part of a stone.

Now of course, you may choose any gemstone for an engagement ring. My opinion would be to choose diamond for several reasons. It is by far the most durable stone. It is more resistant to wearing or chipping than all the other options. The colour is neutral (coloured diamonds aside) so it won't clash with other jewellery or clothes you may wear. Decades later a clean in a jeweller's ultrasonic cleaner is all your diamond will need to look as beautiful as it did when you first saw it.

Shape of diamond is the next important factor. A round is by far the most popular cut. It is designed to diperse the ultimate brilliance and fire. Second most popular is the Princess cut (square). The corners are the most vulnerable to chipping. For safety the corners should be well protected by the setting.

Your choice of metal will be affected by your taste in metal colour primarily. If you like yellow the choice is simple, gold. Karat gold means how pure the alloy is. Eighteen karat gold is as high as I would recommend. Anything higher is too soft and will wear too quickly. Eighteen karat gold is 75% pure. Most engagement rings are made in this karat. Other options of karat are fourteen karat (58.5%) and nine karat (37.5%). If you like white metals you can choose white gold, palladium or paltinum. Most white gold jewellery you will see has had a rhodium plating which makes it look alot more white and shiny. Consider this as it is possibly an annual maintenance that you will need your jeweller to do. Platinum is the ultimate metal. Thirty times mare rare than gold. It is harder so wears less and never needs rhodium plating.
